Penshaw Monument

Class: Reception Year: 2021 - 2022

This week we have been reading the story of The Lambton Worm. The story talked about The Lambton Worm wrapping his tail 7 times around Penshaw Hill. We knew that this was a local landmark. We wrapped up warm and headed over to Penshaw Monument. We climbed the steep steps and looked closely at the monument. Once we were at the top, we looked for signs of The Lambton Worm. From our learning in school, we knew that there are 18 columns on Penshaw Monument, we counted to make sure that they were all there. On column is very special because it has a door that opens to reveal a spiral staircase. We searched around the monument and found the door! Then we used crayons and paper to create rubbings of Penshaw Monument. We looked closely at the patterns on the floor and the columns. Before we headed home, we used our litter pickers to clean up some of the rubbish that had been left behind by other visitors. We know that it is important to keep our environment clean.
