Year 1

Welcome to Year 1 with Miss Parkin and Miss Dowson
In Year 1 we continue to work towards our reading challenge of reading 5 times per week and encouraging Every child to read Every night. Reading bags should be brought into school daily with reading records and reading books. Books will be changed on a Wednesday.
Homework is set every Friday and is a task from the Number Sense programme which they should be able to access with minimal support. This should be returned by the following Wednesday.
PE kits should be worn on your child’s PE days. PE Kit is white t shirt, navy blue or black tracksuit bottoms (no logos) and school jumper or plain hoodie. PE days for Miss Parkin's class are Monday and Friday. PE days for Miss Dowson's class are Wednesday and Friday.
Autumn Term in Year 1…
We have had a truly wonderful autumn term in Year 1, full of exciting learning and memorable experiences. The children enjoyed a visit to Preston Park, where they explored old toys and discovered fascinating things from the past. In science and geography, we investigated extreme weather and seasonal changes, went on a ‘signs of autumn’ hunt, and explored the changing leaves around us. In art, the children loved creating rubbings from natural objects, capturing the textures and patterns they found in nature.
In geography, we explored our country and the surrounding seas, learning about England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland, and discovering features such as the North Sea. In maths, we focused on place value and developed a deep understanding of early numbers up to 10, supported by daily number sense activities and White Rose Maths lessons. In phonics, we continued to ‘grow our code’ using the Little Wandle scheme, reading lots of stories and enjoying a wide variety of books in class.
The children also thought about their dreams and future careers, considering the skills needed to achieve them and what they can do now to start working towards those goals. We celebrated the harvest festival with singing and performed at the church for our Christmas nativity – wonderful opportunities to showcase all we have learned.
In music, we explored keeping the beat using boomwhackers and even played along to the theme from The Addams Family. During DT, the children learned about wheels and axles, designing and making their own moving vehicles. In literacy, they wrote instructions for making a jam sandwich, followed them step by step, and then enjoyed eating their creations! In PE, we have been learning new dance moves and developing our core strength through Real PE.
We have also enjoyed making bird feeders, taking part in a festive Christmas party, and so much more. Year 1 has been full of fun, curiosity, and learning – a truly amazing start to the school year!
