The Great Fire of London and Gateshead – Nov 2021- History

We became mini-historians and learned about the Great Fire of London and compared to it a more local historical fire that happened in Gateshead.

In literacy, we read newspaper accounts of both events and read a fictionalised version of ‘The Great Fire of London’. We learned about Samuel Pepys and wrote our own diary recounts of the events.

In Design and Technology we had a virtual visit from Technology Tom who showed us how to make our own fire-trucks using moving parts, including axels, wheels and a pulley system to raise and lower the ladder. These were great fun!

We created our own Tudor style houses out of junk-modelling and recycling equipment. We used pastels and paint to create shading and silhouette pictures of the fires. We learned about the differences in how buildings were built throughout history and how they are built today.

We learned about how fire safety had improved since the fires happened and how we can keep our classroom and homes as safe as possible against fire.
