A comparison of Maasai Mara and Hetton

We loved being mini-geographers so much we decided to apply the skills and knowledge we learned last term to compare where we live to a place that is very different. We compared the Maasai Mara, in Kenya to Hetton.

First, we had to find out where the Maasai Mara is, we used our globes and atlases as well as Digi-Maps and Google Earth to locate the Massai Mara. We found out that it is in Kenya which is a country in the continent Africa.

We looked at the different features of the Maasai Mara, including the weather, seasons, physical and human features and compared them to Hetton. We learned the temperature and climate are very different depending on how close the equator the country is. We found out that Kenya is very close to the equator and therefore is very hot and Hetton is further away, so our temperature is cooler.

We also learned about the different customs, food and languages that are spoken in the Maasai Mara. We went on a virtual safari of the savannah and found out about the different animals and why the Maasai Mara was a great habitat for the animals.

We learned about African art and explored the work of the famous artist John Ndambo and how he was inspired by the patterns and colours of the Maasai Mara  to create his work. We went for a walk to look at how our environment could inspire us. We looked closely at the patterns in the environment and then made our own art work inspired by the patterns around us, in the style of Africa art.
