Computing

Computing helps to prepare children for the developing world. The subject encourages children to develop an understanding of how technology makes a difference in all aspects of life- at home, at school and in the workplace, as well as considering the impact technology has had on society over the years.  Children should develop Computing skills that can be thoughtfully applied in a range of different situations, with children developing increasing independence in the choices they make over which technology to use to help them reach the desired outcome. As they progress through KS1 and 2 children will become increasing confident in the application of their digital skills, becoming increasingly efficient and effective communicators, collaborators and analysts, showing imagination and creativity in their use of ICT in different aspects of their learning and life beyond school.

What does the National Curriculum say about computing?
The national curriculum for computing aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • can understand and apply the fundamental principles and concepts of computer science, including abstraction, logic, algorithms and data representation
  • can analyse problems in computational terms, and have repeated practical experience of writing computer programs in order to solve such problems
  • can evaluate and apply information technology, including new or unfamiliar technologies, analytically to solve problems
  • are responsible, competent, confident and creative users of information and communication technology.

 

How do we teach computing in School?

At Hetton Lyons, we aim to ensure that our children are able to use, and express themselves and develop their ideas through, information and communication technology.  By planning for and teaching a high-quality computing curriculum, we aim to ensure our children become digitally literate in a fast changing digital world.

The core of computing is computer science, in which pupils are taught the principles of information and computation, how digital systems work, and how to put this knowledge to use through programming. Building on this knowledge and understanding, our children are equipped to use information technology to create programs, systems and a range of content.

At Hetton Lyons, we aim to ensure that our children become safe, considerate and respectful users in an online world.

 

What skills are covered during lessons?
Through a variety of activities and links with science, maths and technology; our children are taught the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to succeed.

How is progression achieved?
Progression is ensured by following a whole school computing curriculum.  Where the knowledge, skills and outcomes are clearly marked alongside National Curriculum statements.
