Starting School 2018

Thank you for choosing to send your child to Hetton Lyons Primary School. It was lovely to meet you and welcome you in person at our open evening.

Your child is starting school in their Reception year, this is the final year of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).

We want to help you to prepare your child for their first year at school. The first few weeks and visits are the most important for every child, as it is during this time that your child forms their own relationships and attitudes towards school. Our aim is to work together to make this transition a smooth and happy one for everyone.

What will happen in September?

Week 1- Tuesday 4th September to Friday 7th September

This week the children will start at 9 am and finish at 11.30 am. This week is all about establishing the daily routines and getting to know the classroom and most importantly getting to know the staff and other children. You are welcome to come into school with your child to help them find their name, hang up their coat and putting their water bottle away. If your child is confident you may wish to to make them independent right from the start and leave them at the door.

All children starting school respond in different ways. We will strive to ensure that your child's experiences are fun and safe. We understand this is a huge milestone for you and your child. If your child is struggling with the separation, give them a kiss and a cuddle and confidently tell them goodbye, telling them that you will see them after school. We will support them coming into the classroom.

You will be invited this week to sample a school lunch with your child. You can choose the day you would like to stay at our Saturday morning stay and play

We will use the afternoons of this week to offer home visits. Home visits help to develop the relationship between home and school and give you time to talk to staff on a 1 to 1 basis. If you would like a home visit, please contact either your child's class teacher or via the school office.

Week 2- Monday 11th September: 8.55 am to 3.15 pm

Children will begin to enter and leave school via the playground. Please try to help the start of the day by being on the playground at 8.50 am this gives a smooth and relaxed start to the day. From this week we ask that children come into school on their own. If there are problems we will work with you to make your children confident and happy to come in on their own.

Breakfast Club and After School Club are available for parents from 7.30 am to 5.30 pm. The cost of childcare is available from Ms K Todd in the school office. She will also be able to help you booking places.
