Music

Wider Opportunities Music

We use our music grant to provide wider opportunity music to different year groups. This gives all children across the school the opportunity to play a variety of different  instrument. In KS 1 all of the children learn to play the Ocarina which is a woodwind instrument. In KS 2 children all learn to play the ukulele and have keyboard lessons. In Year 6 the children use i pads to compose music using Garage Band.

As well as giving all children the opportunity to play a instrument in a group, wider opportunities music helps children decide if they would like to take on an instrument or develop their skills further.

If you would like your child to pay an instrument  please contact the school office for more information.

The School Choir

We are really proud of our school choir. They brighten up all school events and support community events. Every year they take part in festivals and competitions and usually come home with an award or trophy!. The images below show the choir performing at the opening ceremony of Houghton Feast.

The School Band

Our school has a very successful school band led by Mrs Smith. The band meet weekly to practice their pieces and play at school events and in the community. In the last year they have played at coffee mornings and concerts in school. They have also played at the Durham Festival of Brass and Beamish Museum. The children who play in the band have lessons in school and also have the opportunity to play with the Hetton and Houghton Youth Band.

Exam Success

Congratulations to Hannah Lockey, Sally Lockey, William Swift, Eve Wardle, Morgan Thorne, Bobby Winter, Jasmine White and Lucy Bowden who were successful in their Royal School of Music Exams.

Music Programme 2016/2017

Mrs Smith teachers music across the school on a weekly basis from Reception to Year 6. There is also a full programme of wider opportunities music that children can take part in and individual music lessons that are available.

Whole Class Music Making

In year 2 all of the children play the Ocarina. In Year 3 they play the Ukulele and in year 4 all children have keyboard lessons. In the summer term Year 6 all of the children compose and create music using garage Band.

Singing

Children in KS2 have the opportunity to sing either with the school choir or with the Rock Choir. After October half term we will be starting a lower school choir for children in Year 2. In the summer term all of the children in Year 5 have the opportunity to take part in The Big Sing at The Sage in Gateshead.

Wider Opportunities

The school band meets on a weekly basis and gives children who have lessons with the music peripatetic teachers the chance to play in a group. We also offer children the opportunity to sit Royal School of Music Exams. Children playing guitar also have the opportunity to sit the 'Acoustic Guitar Debut Grade', curated via the Rockschool series of exams.

This year we will also be taking part in local community events such as singing at Beamish Museum, music festivals and at Houghton Feast and the switching on of Christmas Lights in Sunderland and Hetton. We  will also be supporting Sunderland's bid to be the City of Culture by organising play days for other schools, having specialist concerts and taking part in organised events such as song writing.

Nine of our brass children will be performing at the Royal Albert Hall on Monday November 14th as part of Music For Youth. This will be a fantastic experience  for these young musicians.

Community Opportunities

As a school we have very successful links with Houghton Area Youth Band and CASA Performing Arts. These groups meet on a weekly basis in our school and provide children with a fantastic opportunity to develop their skills with a wide group of young people. Foe further information on these groups please contact the school office.
